LAS VEGAS, NV – An Illinois teenager stands accused of orchestrating two significant cyberattacks on major Las Vegas casino groups, including MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment. The attacks, which occurred in 2023, have led to charges of extortion, conspiracy, and more, as revealed in a Las Vegas courtroom this week.
The 17-year-old suspect, who remains unidentified due to legal restrictions, allegedly conducted these cyber intrusions from his home, using sophisticated social engineering techniques. Prosecutors have described the actions as a form of cyber terrorism initiated when the suspect was only 15.
In a high-stakes legal battle spanning multiple states and even reaching the UK, the case has drawn significant attention. Caesars reportedly paid a group known as “Scattered Spider” $15 million following threats and extortion. The FBI is still unable to trace $1.8 million of the ransom paid in Bitcoin.
MGM Resorts, on the other hand, reported losses of $200 million, although this figure was disputed by an MGM spokesperson, who cited a $110 million loss covered by insurance. More than 65,000 social security numbers were compromised in the attacks, according to prosecutor Summer Clark.
The FBI’s investigation led to a raid on the teen’s home in December 2023 and again in February, uncovering hidden laptops and other evidence. Defense attorney Richard Schonfeld argued for the teen’s release, emphasizing his lack of criminal history and voluntary surrender in Nevada with his mother.
Judge D. Butler acknowledged the severity of the allegations and ordered the teen’s release under strict conditions, including constant supervision in Las Vegas and limited internet access for educational purposes only. The teen is scheduled to return to court on November 20, where prosecutors intend to push for the case to be tried in the adult system.
The defense maintains that the case should remain in juvenile court, arguing that the crimes, though severe, should be treated differently than typical adult offenses. The case continues to unfold as several adults face federal charges in connection with the cyberattacks.
